Cosmetic Surgery Questions to Ask Your Doctor
by
Andrea Avery
Deciding to have cosmetic surgery can be the best decision you ve ever made. But if you don t pick the right doctor, it could also be the worst. While nothing compares to doing your own hard research when it comes to choosing the right place for your procedure, many of your fears can either be confirmed or put to rest by having an open and frank discussion with your surgeon. Those initial consultations are there for a reason. And part of that reason is to give you time to ask questions and get to know the person whose hands your putting your health. Here are some questions you should make sure you get the answers to.
What Anesthesia Will Be Used?
If there is one most dangerous part of cosmetic surgery, it is probably the anesthesia. Make sure you know exactly what will be used when you go under the knife. Usually, you will either get general, local, or sedation anesthesia. With local anesthesia, you ll be awake during your procedure. While this may seem unpleasant, it is actually a much safer route. Having said that, there are many surgeries where it won t be an option. But if you go to a respected doctor with a qualified staff, you shouldn t have anything to worry about.
What About Scarring?
One of the primary reasons for cosmetic surgery is to make you look better when you come out of the operating room. So why is it that so many doctors are haphazard when it comes to making incisions that will leave visible, obvious scarring? Make sure your doctor isn t one of those people when you have your initial consultation. Ask them where your incisions will be and the reasoning behind that decision. Ask them other thoughts they might have when it comes to making your procedure look as natural as possible.
Can I See Pictures?
You can learn a lot about your doctor by asking to see pictures of his other surgeries. Granted, they are going to show you their best work only. But still, you should be able to get an idea of their techniques and what kind of look his patients come out with. If you like what you see, it can give you a great deal of confidence moving forward. If you don t like what you see, you should realize that your results would probably look very similar. You may want to think about going to someone else.
Who Pays For Revisions?
If the cosmetic surgery doesn t give you the results you have a right to expect, will you be forced to come up with the money for revisions, or will the doctor do them for free? This is a fairly important concept to nail down, as some procedures have a revision rate as high as 20%. You don t want to be stuck paying double for the results you should have gotten in the first place.
